Back in 2009, on our way to Albuquerque, New Mexico, we stopped for the night in Page, Arizona.
On the outskirts of Page is the famous Horseshoe Bend where the Colorado river carved an incision that looks like a horseshoe.
Those were the days before the massive crowds drawn to the place by social media, we could actually have the whole bend just to ourselves. That afternoon it was just me, Matthias Taugwalder and Sandra Mexa to enjoy the serenity of the place.
Unfortunately, the high deserts of Arizona aren't ones to contempt with and shortly after I took the pano, the horizon started to look fuzzy and we could feel something was coming for us. Well, it was a sand storm the likes of which we never seen before and when we noticed it was a tad too late.
We ran for the car protecting our gear the best we could, but it was quite a bit of a trek over rocks to the car park by the side of the road on Highway 89. We made it to the hotel to have a hot steamy bath to get rid of all that sand but all I can say is the next day when I woke up, there was sand everywhere in my bed and even to this day I sometimes can feel sand falling out of my ears!
